Dragon and Phoenix
Set off on a magical journey in time through the civilisations of the Chinese and Islamic worlds. The exhibition “Dragon and Phoenix” tells the story of over a thousand years of exchanges, both material and immaterial.
An ideal of technical prowess and beauty, China fascinated the Islamic world. As a supplier of luxury objects, the Islamic world inspired China.
Between the two worlds there developed a veritable system of international trade, initially overland, via the different routes that formed the Silk Road, and then across the seas, with the development of new navigation tools and the opening of new passages across the Indian Ocean. These communications networks enabled the circulation of objects, technologies, images, people and ideas. Ceramics, gold and silver ware, as well as, silk, all followed and illustrated this process. These are the treasures you will discover in this exhibition, embodying the rich history of cultural interactions between two worlds: the encounter between the dragon and the phoenix.
